EGG-LAYING SEASON OF THE LEATHERBACK SEA TURTLES HAS BEGUN |
The egg-laying season of the leatherback sea turtles has already begun at Tortuguero National Park; the beauty of this natural event draws numerous tourists from all over the world. The administrator of the Tortuguero National Park, Eduardo Chamorro, pointed out that the leatherback sea turtle is the largest species of its kind and the one that travels the farthest distances. In the year 2006, during the egg-laying season of the leatherback sea turtles, 160 turtles showed up on the beaches of Tortuguero during the months of January through May. The Tortuguero National Park is located on the Caribbean Coast, in the province of Limón, approximately 80 kilometers to the Northeast of the city that carries the same name. These turtles get their name due to their soft and flexible shells, without the bony plates that characterize other species of turtles. They also have long fins and a more hydrodynamic silhouette than other sea turtles. |
