About the Caribbean Coast
Everything that you would expect of a tropical destination is served
up on a golden platter on Costa Rica's Caribbean coast. Lush surroundings
and friendly people are the ultimate compliments to any traveler's
vacation. Bordered by Nicaragua and Panama, the Caribbean coast spans
almost 200 kilometers.
Climate
This area of the country is generally hot and experiences
quite a bit of rain. Temperatures hover generally between the mid to
high 80's Fahrenheit. As much as 400 centimeters of rain has been recorded
during one year. Since the coast has the advantage of refreshing ocean
breezes, the weather is bearable. "Since the changing factor is
rain, this is how it falls: January and November are transitional periods
with higher winds and some rainy days. February through May is generally
sunny with a little rain. July and December are the months of heaviest
rainfall. Mid August through the first part of November is summer with
the least rain. For diving, March, April and May, as well as September
and October are "bookable"
diving months; there's little doubt of weather conditions suitable
for diving on any given day"
The Southern Caribbean coast
Puerto Viejo is located toward the south of the Limón Province
along the highway to Bribrí, 10 km after Cahuita. Together with
Cocles Beach, the shoreline here extends for 10 km. Between Puerto
Viejo and Cocles Beach, a coral reef allows for the creation of a true
aquarium that is very attractive for free diving. The presence of land
and marine animals and plants creates a beautiful natural setting where
visitors can enjoy sun, beach, ocean, diving, surfing and photo opportunities.
The prettiest beaches of the country's east coast are located here
as are several famous surfing spots. The area beaches and surf locations
include: Playa Negra, Escuelita, Salsa Brava, Playa Chiquita, Playa
Cocles, Punta Uva, Manzanillo. Cahuita National Park protects 2,500
acres, much of which consists of an underwater area of coral reefs
and sea grasses. More reefs are found a bit further down the coast
and these are included in the 25,000-acre Gandoca-Manzanillo National
Wildlife Refuge. The terrestrial flora and fauna is similar in both
reserves, and has many species in common with the previous region,
both being located on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica.
